We had a chance to showcase several local, native hardwoods and softwoods in the millwork, casework, and furniture we provided for this update of a two-story 1914 Craftsman home in Berkeley, CA. In the living room, we fabricated paint-grade book cases and designed and fabricated the window bench seat in doug-fir (top) with madrone-faced pull out storage beneath. In the dining room, we restored much of the existing oldgrowth redwood wainscoting and fabricated a dining table in powdercoated steel with salvaged bigleaf maple in-fill. In the half-bath we added downstairs, we fabricated a sliding door cabinet in reclaimed redwood and madrone, as well as casing/trim in oldgrowth redwood. Along the existing stairwell, we designed and installed a custom handrail in bay laurel with custom brackets. This project was a great example of how small, thoughtful, well-crafted moves can make all the difference. At the end of the job, we recommended the original doug-fir flooring be stained black to give the space a more refined feel and make all the new updates pop.
